The European Commission officially launched the European Year of Skills on 9 May 2023 with the aim to encourage lifelong learning and boost workers’ skills, with a special focus on digital and green technology skills. Objectives are as follows:
- promoting investment in training and upskilling
- ensuring the quality of workers’ skills as against labour market needs, by closely cooperating with social partners, companies, employment services and major stakeholders in the field of education and vocational training
- ensuring that people’s aspirations and skills match with opportunities available on the job market, especially in sectors involved in the green and digital transitions and in economic recovery
- attracting skills and talents from third Countries, by strengthening learning opportunities as well as mobility, and by facilitating qualifications recognition.
The European Parliament, the Council, the European Commission, Member States, social partners, public and private employment services, chambers of commerce and industry, schools, universities, and education and training providers, as well as workers and businesses, are called to work together in order to give new impetus to the achievement of EU social objectives for 2030.
Organising participation in the European Year of Skills at a national and regional level is the Member States’ responsibility. To that end, each Member State has designated a national coordinator in charge of acting as the contact point among all relevant stakeholders, coordinating activities and promoting the Initiative’s objectives throughout the national territory.
The national coordinator for Italy, appointed by the Ministry of Labour, in agreement with the Ministry of Education, is Inapp’s Director-General, Dr. Santo Darko Grillo.
